Trust me, it is a grittier and way less vanilla experience when you witness everything in person. And quite often some of the most interesting things that happen at the Rose Parade are entirely scrubbed from those "live" TV broadcasts. Orwell style, like they never happened and you didn't need to know anything anyway.
Below are three examples I caught on my iPhone yesterday that, for whatever the reason, did not make it into the Ken & Barbie "live" Eyewitless News parade coverage. The first was an airborne assault on the presidential candidacy of Donald Trump, carried out by five small planes leaving sky-written messages such as this:
The next to get left out in the cold was a rather spirited and chaotic Bernie Sanders for President demonstration, tacked on at the very end of the parade.
The third was the Pasadena Lutheran Church float, featuring someone who looked a whole lot like the rock star lead from Jesus Christ Superstar. The gasps from the crowd as this float went by were palpable and real, but the Lutherans got no Ken & Barbie television love. Go figure. Plus the Lutherans were also stuck near the very end of the parade. Only Bernie Sanders and some folks on horses came later.
It isn't like these three examples given the Eyewitless Airbrush have too much in common, right? So what exactly is the local TV news criteria for ignoring important events and institutions in their live Tournament of Roses Parade coverage?
Sierra Madre wins again! I did get several pictures of the Sierra Madre float. This shot is my favorite. Congratulations to all those great folks for yet another award winning year! A remarkable achievement that never stops.
