Top-Ranking Proud Boy is Snitching for the Feds and Helping Jan 6 Investigators Big Time (Political Flarelink): Until recently, prosecutors investigating the Proud Boys over their role in the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol didn’t have much to go on. But thanks to one key member of the hate group, that’s all changed.
Vice News reports that 34-year-old
Charles Donohoe, one of the group’s leaders decided last week to “testify in any and all cases where his testimony ‘might be deemed relevant to the government.'” It’s all part of a plea deal
Donohoe took to reduce his sentence from a potential maximum of 20 years to six years (including the year he’s already spent in jail.)
Raw Story reports he has agreed to plead guilty in regard to charges of conspiracy to obstruct an official and assaulting an officer and has agreed to cooperate in exchange for the lesser sentence.
Barbara McQuade, a former U.S. Attorney notes this is indeed, a big deal. McQuade, who oversaw Michigan’s Eastern District from 2010 to 2017 says Donohoe’s plea deal is “a significant development in the case against the Proud Boys defendants.”
Until
Donohoe’s decision to testify, prosecutors had to rely on texts and online communications in order to build their cases. Now having a high-ranking
Proud Boys member means more details will be provided, making upcoming prosecutions considerably easier.
“His agreement to cooperate means that any trial against other Proud Boys members will include his testimony, which will be important evidence for the prosecution,” McQuade said, adding that his cooperation “might signal his ability to provide information up the chain to organizers and leaders who planned the attack.”
“We are learning that the attack on the
Capitol was not a spontaneous event for all participants, but instead was planned by at least two groups, the
Proud Boys and the
Oath Keepers,”
McQuade explained. “Investigators will want to know how high up that planning and coordination went.”
