Deer Poaching at the Mater Dolorosa Monastery

Mod: I received the following sad news from our friend Shirley Moore yesterday afternoon.

Hey, JC:  deer hunters at Bailey Canyon this morning.  They took a young buck with a beautiful rack, bow-hunting style.  We did not get the license plate of the car, but an older 5 series blueish gray BMW with a black top (correction: hood), kind of beat up paint and body, older man, 60s and glasses, with younger man, brunette, facial hair, mid-30s maybe.  They had a hand truck and we followed the tracks of the hand truck to the hill behind the monastery; apparently, that's where they bagged him and then they hauled him out with the hand truck.

We did call the police, they just called me back and they are creating a flyer for distribution with a description of the guys.  I'm trying to get a hold of someone in SMEAC to discuss with them, since the signage at Bailey Canyon indicates that weapons of any kind and hunting are prohibited.

My brother went back up to the monastery and spoke with the friars and told them what happened and they were visibly upset.  One of the friars had photographed that particular buck and used the picture for his Christmas cards.  Kevin said there was a small herd of deer on the lawn of the monastery when he drove up there - one buck and several does.

Anyway, you live right there, thought you should know and maybe want to alert your neighbors to keep an eye out for that car, if they decide to return for another easy kill.

Call the police if you spot the hunters in the area again … Thanks!

Mod: If you see the car or individuals Shirley describes in her email please give the Sierra Madre Police Department a call at (626) 355-1414. Hunting within the borders of Sierra Madre is strictly prohibited, as is the use of the kind of weaponry described here. Whoever these jerks are, they have broken at least a few laws and it would be nice if they were caught. Thanks.

A video of the deer living at the Mater Dolorosa Monastery was put together in August of 2012 by the blog Pasadena Adjacent. You can view it by clicking here.
