Mod: I wonder why Jim Bakker presumes he can speak for God? That takes a special kind of hubris.
Bakker: Masks Are Satanic Because They Block Prayers(
Business Standard News link):
Scamvangelist Jim Bakker claims he will refuse any government mandates that require mask usage. In a press release,
Bakker also claimed masks were satanic and part of a government plot to suppress
Christianity.
“How can you go to church and pray when you’re wearing a mask?” said
Bakker. “Do you think
God can hear your prayers through a mask?”
Many other fundamentalists preachers have also refused to wear masks in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.
Greg Locke, pastor of
Global Vision Bible Church in
Tennessee, declared he was “sick of this mask brigade” nonsense in a
Facebook video.
“We don’t require masks at our church,” he said. “We probably had 450 people crammed into a tent this weekend. Two people in the whole place had a mask. If they want to wear a mask, that is great, I’m not going to mandate it. As a matter of fact, I discourage it because I think it’s utter nonsense.” And conspiracy nut
Chris McDonald claimed wearing a mask could lead to being forced to wear a hijab or a “
Gestapo uniform,” according to
Right Wing Watch.
However, a new study by the Journal for the
Study of Scientific Religion showed that refusing to wear a mask was a sign of
Christian nationalism and distrust of science.
“Specifically, polls and rapid‐response studies have also shown that
Americans who were more religious or religiously conservative (e.g., evangelicals) were more likely to distrust scientific and media sources over the
President (Burge 2020a), and subsequently less likely to social distance, wear masks, or otherwise take recommended precautionary measures, while more secular
Americans were more likely to follow these guidelines,” said the study.
“More specifically, we theorize that divergent behavioral responses to the
COVID‐19 pandemic were more strongly shaped by a hyper‐partisan and ultra‐conservative ideology that has already been shown to lower
Americans’ trust in science and scientific expertise.”
