"Councilmembers, I am sorry that I cannot attend this evening. I promised the Arcadia Eastern Star Chapter that that I would take minutes at their meeting, which is at the same time as your City Council meeting. I have asked a friend to read my comments.
Good evening Mayor, Mayor Pro Tem and City Councilmembers. My name is Nancy Shollenberger, retired City Clerk of 32 years.
The election process is over so I am surprised that you are even discussing the compensation of the City Clerk. I thought that could only be discussed when the City Clerk is up for election. The election is over and the new City Clerk was elected under the same compensation that was paid to me.
The City Clerk position is the biggest asset you have in this city. I am disappointed that you are even discussing the compensation of the City Clerk, other than giving her a raise. You will be electing a new City Clerk every four years if you don't at least pay her what you were paying me.
You need to put some value on the City Clerk's time. She is not on the same level as the City Council. She is a staff person and has work to do at City Hall. The minutes are not typed at the City Clerk's leisure, there are deadlines that must be met.
Please don't listen to a "select few" in town - this is not a political issue, it is a commonsense issue, and I am asking you to do the right thing!
I will give you the City Clerk's responsibilities and financial review papers that were given to Melinda Carrillo when she picked up her candidate's packet. She was elected under those terms. Also, I will include the sheet that the City Manager gave to Melinda. Who decides the City Clerk's responsibilities and compensation?
The next to last paragraph of the City Manager's list reads as follows:
Recommended to designate a deputy present at City Hall for receipt of all materials delivered to the City Clerk during hours when the City Clerk is not present at City Hall.
Do you really expect this deputy to sit at City Hall whenever the City Clerk is not there for free? Mayor and City Council, leave things the way they are. They have worked very well for 60 years. That I can vouch for.
The City Clerk is a part-time, not a full-time, employee, and should not be expected to be present every day, all day, at City Hall. That would be an absolute waste of her time, and the deputy's time. She is elected by the people, to serve the people. Let her do the job. Thank you."
Mod: The treatment accorded Melissa Carrillo on her first night on that job was uncalled for, rude, and even personally threatening. Odd behavior for a group that often congratulates itself for its civility. She is owed an apology by the majority of the City Council, and the City Manager.

Mod: This comment from yesterday pretty much sums it all up.
Mod: So what was the City Manager and her boy toys attempting to accomplish by all of this? Shut down what has been a democratically elected office in this community for decades just so City Manager Aguilar can finesse meeting records? Or something? It just makes no sense. Sierra Madre Weekly coverage of the Dedicato TC debacle
Mod: Great article in today's SMW on the Dedicato mess. Terry Miller has got to be one of the hardest working guys in the newspaper business. At the end of his piece (which gives props to The Tattler for breaking this story) there is the following letter from a resident who is asking all of the right questions (link):
Mod: So now we have two newspapers that Dedicato refused to talk with. Who knows, maybe they're just shy.
