We used to talk about the City of Sierra Madre's employee health care plan costs so much in 2013 that the issue became difficult to ignore. Things actually did change downtown and employee health care plans in Sierra Madre today are no longer quite as costly as they used to be. At least in a comparative thinking sort of way. But when they were, people did begin talking. Here is a graphic we posted a just a couple of years ago.
Of course, overall benefits costs have not come down quite that much in Sierra Madre. They're still pretty high, especially for a small town with a very finite (and small) community of taxpayers. Here are the 2014 Top 20 salaries and benefits in the Foothill Village according to the Transparent California website (link):
As far as total benefits go, those folks are not cheap dates. It costs a lot of money just to get them out of the door in the morning. Certainly it would be interesting to see those total 2014 benefits figures broken down into their individual kernels of golden goodness. Health care versus CalPERS, that sort of thing.
I'm going to have to see if I can't get that. You know, so folks know exactly what they're voting for in April when casting a ballot for or against 10% utility taxes. We're certainly not getting that kind of information from the usual in town sources.
So anyway, there is now another city in the employee health care crown running, one that makes Sierra Madre, even in its 2013 glory days, look kinda cheap. And that new wonderland of excessive employee rewards would be none other than the City Of Industry. Check this out (link):
Pretty wild, right? Certainly higher than where the City of Sierra Madre was at when it was paying nearly $35,000 for its top 5 city employee health care plans in 2013?
That is obviously true. But maybe not quite as much as you might have first thought?
